I picked up this book by Stephen Batchelor for the sole purpose of reading his account of how and why the Buddha was murdered. They should read Stephen Batchelor's “Confession Of A Buddhist Atheist”. There are plenty of western Buddhist who embrace various superstitions, but I am certainly not alone as a secular Buddhist. And yes, I am still an atheist. I think Batchelor's argument is worth discussing here because it succinctly frames what I take to be the fundamental theological issue: the nature of suffering (and, thus, the nature of grace). To set it up, he was a hippie in the early 70′s, traveling through the Middle East, and found himself becoming a Buddhist monk for a time.
